"I understand..." - Journalist: Liverpool move ahead of Bayern in race to sign 'special' star,…

Liverpool has moved ahead of Bayern Munich in the race to sign AZ Alkmaar star Kees Smit this summer, according to BILD journalist Christian Falk.

The Reds had a record-breaking summer transfer window last year, spending well over £400m as they brought in Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, but they have struggled on the pitch this season, and their Premier League title defence has been dreadful.

The team are now battling to qualify for next season's Champions League, but the club are already planning for the summer window and after completing a deal for Jeremy Jacquet, Liverpool are also now moving in the race to strengthen their midfield.

Liverpool Ahead of Bayern for Kees Smit

Smit, who has emerged as a top young midfield prospect in Europe this season, has attracted the interest of a number of top clubs on the continent, including the likes of Real Madrid, Newcastle, and Arsenal.

Some reports had suggested that Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich were also in the race for his signature, but according to the ever-reliable Falk, they are not looking for new midfielders this summer, and Liverpool are believed to be one of the frontrunners to get a deal done for the young Dutchman.

"From what I understand, Arsenal and the likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid are closer to signing this player [Kees Smit] than Bayern Munich," he said.

"It’s not hot for Bayern Munich. Smit is a player Arsenal is also interested in, so for Goretzka, this could be a potential rival for his position next summer."

Smit is expected to be the subject of one of the biggest battles this summer, and Liverpool have already held talks with AZ Alkmaar about a deal that could reach around £30m.

However, some reports have suggested that a deal could become far more expensive than that because of the competition for his signature.

Liverpool Need Midfield Additions

Kees Smit

Midfield is one of the areas at Anfield that is strong, with a number of top options available to Arne Slot, but it could still do with some fresh legs coming in.

Curtis Jones has been heavily linked with an exit, while Alexis Mac Allister's form has been inconsistent this season, and a player like Smit, who has been described as 'special' is someone who could come in and up the levels once more.

It's clear that he has a very bright future, and Slot will know him better than most, so if he is still at the club next season, he could be instrumental in getting a deal over the line.
