Curtis Jones bullish over his ambitions: “I want to win everything”

Curtis Jones excelled at right-back in Liverpool’s 3-0 win at home to Brighton, and he has asserted his ambitions for himself with the Reds.

The Reds booked a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup, with Jones among his side’s best players, along with Milos Kerkez, Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah.

After a lack of football of late, he staked a claim for playing more, opening the scoring against Brighton and shining in an auxiliary role.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Jones was equally impressive, outlining his team ethic by saying he will play wherever Arne Slot wants him to.

“I say it all the time. I’m a footballer,” Jones said.

“Yeah I’m a centre mid and I want to score goals and assist and help the team, but if the manager needs me and the team needs me to go and play as a centre-half or a full-back, a striker, I go and do it and I’ll try my best.

“Today I was in there as a full-back and obviously I’ve scored and helped the team, so I’m happy.”

Jones further went on to speak bullishly about his own aspirations as a player, and the team, looking for silverware despite a disappoining season overall.

“I want to win everything. I play as a fan as well and I know what the fans expect,” he added.

“Again, on top of being a fan I obviously know what it’s like to play for a team like this: you have to win things.

“Whether that’s the Champions League, the Premier League, if you don’t win the main two there’s another two that we can go and win.

“We’re in the Champions League still and in the FA Cup as well, which is a big cup as well, obviously it’d be great to come away with those two.

“But there’s plenty of games to play, so we’re taking each game as it comes and hopefully at the end of the year we come away with the Champions League and the FA Cup.”

Has Curtis Jones made the right-back spot his own at Liverpool?

Jones was superb in the victory over Brighton, taking his goal with aplomb and looking so at home at right-back.

Writing in his player ratings for This Is Anfield, James Nalton handed him in a nine-out-of-10 score, saying he demonstrated his “valuable versatility” after moving to No. 10. after the break.

On this evidence, Jones should be a leading right-back option between now and the end of the season, battling Jeremie Frimpong when he returns from injury.

That will allow Liverpool’s Player of the Season, Szoboszlai, to play exclusively in his preferred midfield role.

There is a feeling that Jones has been underused by Slot this season, but he showed on Saturday why he is a great asset for the Reds.

It highlighted the need to tie him down to a new contract, with the idea of losing a homegrown player at 25 years of age bordering on negligent.
