Hungary national team boss Marco Rossi has claimed that Dominik Szoboszlai has always dreamed of playing for Real Madrid.
Dominik Szoboszlai’s Real Madrid dream: A quick look
• Madrid lure: Hungary boss Marco Rossi claims playing for Real Madrid has been Szoboszlai’s “one dream” since childhood.
• Anfield future: Despite the claims, contract talks have reportedly progressed to keep the midfielder at Liverpool beyond 2028.
• Own story: Szoboszlai recently rejected Steven Gerrard comparisons, insisting he wants to write his own legacy as a Red.
Szoboszlai’s exceptional season continued on Saturday evening, with Liverpool’s No. 8 scoring a ruthless goal in the 3-0 win at home to Brighton.
The 25-year-old has easily been the Reds’ best player in 2025/26, scoring 10 goals, shining in several positions and arguably becoming a world-class player.
Liverpool are understandably keen to keep Szoboszlai, but speaking to WinWin (via Marca), Rossi talked up the idea of him sealing a move to Madrid.

“Due to the very close and direct relationship I have had with Dominik Szoboszlai since he started playing football as a child, Real Madrid has always been his dream,” Rossi said.
“Since he started playing football, Dominik has had only one dream: to play for Real Madrid.
“I don’t know if he will be able to take that step, because the decision depends on him and also on his club.
“The idea that is always on your mind is to fulfil your dream and make it a reality, and, from my point of view, that is the only and most important thought that can dominate Dominik’s mind.
“However, I do not rule out the possibility of him staying at Liverpool and renewing his contract there, especially as he is highly valued within the club.
“He is a very important player for Liverpool, and Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
Szoboszlai has been a joy to watch for Liverpool this season, and extending his contract beyond 2028 has to be priority business in the coming months.
Dominik Szoboszlai shoots down Steven Gerrard comparisons
Szoboszlai’s all-action performances are naturally seeing him likened to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, but he was quick to shoot down those comparisons after the Brighton game.
“Actually I’m not playing a Steven Gerrard season,” Szoboszlai insisted.
“Although he was a legend for the club, I try to do my own story. I try to do my best every game and hopefully we can go until the end.”
At 25, the Hungarian is heading into his peak years and is one of Europe’s best midfielders, so losing him would be a crippling blow.
The lure of Madrid is great for many footballers, as Trent Alexander-Arnold proved last season, but hopefully, Szoboszlai sees his future at Anfield.
There have been no credible links regarding a switch, which can only bode well, and he has said there has been “progress” over a new deal, despite “no decision” being made yet.
Szoboszlai is a potential heir to Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool’s next captain, and he has the talent and drive to be a future Reds legend.
