Man City 'Remain Keen' On Signing Striker Who Is 'Second Only' To Haaland But Chelsea Are Also In The Mix

Man City are still keeping close tabs on Brentford striker Igor Thiago despite the Brazilian recently signing a new contract, according to reports.

The 24-year-old put pen to paper on a five-and-a-half-year deal on Friday, but TEAMtalk claim that Pep Guardiola’s side “remain keen” on recruiting the player.

Thiago has had an excellent season so far, having bagged 17 league goals, which means he is “second only to Erling Haaland” in the goalscoring charts.

It is a stark contrast to his first campaign at Brentford, where he failed to score, having been limited to 8 appearances after picking up two separate knee injuries.

Thiago does have other suitors

Chelsea are also said to be weighing up a move for the striker. Liam Delap has struggled during his first season at Stamford Bridge, and there is already talk that he could be let go less than 12 months after his arrival from Ipswich Town.

Bayern Munich, meanwhile, are interested in Thiago as well. The Bundesliga champions are not expected to keep Nicolas Jackson, who is on loan from Chelsea, and they are reportedly seeking a long-term replacement for Harry Kane too.

Man City may prioritise other positions

Considering Haaland is rarely unavailable, and the fact that the Cityzens paid €70m (£59m) for Omar Marmoush only last year, it seems unlikely that another striker will be top of the club’s agenda this summer.

Many feel that Director of Football Hugo Viana will seek out a central midfielder. The future of captain Bernardo Silva is uncertain, and the club have been linked with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson.

The search for a new right-back is also believed to be ongoing. Newcastle’s Tino Livramento and another Brentford player, Michael Kayode, have been mentioned as potential candidates for that position.
