Man United nearly signed Liverpool star now considered 'among best in world'

Manchester United want to overhaul their midfield in 2026, but years ago, they almost secured the signature of current Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai.

Dominik Szoboszlai has been in sensational form for Manchester United’s arch-rivals Liverpool this season, scoring 10 goals and seven assists this season in what has been an otherwise poor season for the Merseyside outfit.

A move to Old Trafford can now be ruled out. The number of players who have played for United and Liverpool is minimal for good reason.

But Szoboszlai did almost end up at United well before he made his move to Anfield in 2023.

Manchester United came close to signing Dominik Szoboszlai in 2020

Six years ago, United were being linked with moves for Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager.

It is easily forgotten, but United were also linked with Szoboszlai as a midfield option.

There were plenty of reasons why United should have signed Szoboszlai considering he was one of the most promising young talents in Europe, but a deal never came to fruition.

As per TeamTalk, Solskjaer actually requested that United sign Szoboszlai, but he ended up being another target overlooked by the Glazers.

At the time, Szoboszlai was valued at around €30m (£26m), but his form at Liverpool has caused his value to rise astronomically.

Ex-Man United target Dominik Szoboszlai now world-class

If missing out on Szoboszlai wasn’t bad enough already for United, watching him flourish at Liverpool rubs salt in the wounds.

After Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Brighton in the FA Cup this weekend, Mohamed Salah was full of praise for his Hungarian teammate.

“We rely on him so much. This season he is one of the best players in the world,” Salah said, via Sky Sports.

Instead of Szoboszlai, United will have to shop around the Premier League for other world-class talent. The top target is Elliot Anderson, but fresh links to Sandro Tonali could make for an interesting summer saga.
