Opinion: Why£61m Brazilian would actually be a bargain for Chelsea’s defensive rebuild

Chelsea were linked with Juventus star Gleison Bremer last year, and it looks like they could get the opportunity to sign him this summer.

It is thought that Chelsea are not ruling out a move for Bremer, though the defender could be a bit pricey.

However, after spending more than £100m each on Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, two midfielders, whatever they pay for a top-quality centre-back like Bremer could end up being a bargain.

Liam Rosenior is in need of a certain type of centre-half, and Bremer fits the bill.

The Marc Guehi ship has sailed… Any experienced alternatives that come to mind ahead of this summer?

Gleison Bremer signing would bring more experience to Stamford Bridge

According to Calciomercato, Juventus do not want to sell Bremer this summer. However, the same outlet has suggested that they will have to rethink their stance if Chelsea, Liverpool or Bayern Munich make a €70m (£60.8m) offer for him.

That is good news for the Blues, who are planning to improve their defence ahead of the 2026/27 season. That was their aim in the January transfer window, but it was not accomplished after they missed out on Jeremy Jacquet, who joined Liverpool instead.

That could end up being a blessing in disguise if Chelsea go on to sign Bremer, though. At 28 and having played for both Juventus and Brazil, Bremer has way more experience than Jacquet. And that is exactly what this youthful Chelsea squad needs.

Overall, Bremer is also a fantastic defender. This season, he is winning 2.3 aerial duels per game in Serie A, which is the second-highest average in Juventus’ squad, according to WhoScored.

Making 3.5 per game, the Brazilian also has the third-highest average for clearances.

Who Chelsea could sacrifice to sign Gleison Bremer

Bremer could very well be a bargain for Chelsea, but they will need to offload a defender or two before they can bring the Brazil international in.

In their first-team squad currently, the Blues have Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo, Josh Acheampong and Mamadou Sarr.

Who would you sell out of Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo? 👋

Levi Colwill will be another first-team option when he returns from injury, while Aaron Anselmino is on loan at Strasbourg.

That number is too high and will have to be trimmed down whether Chelsea sign Bremer or not.
