Martin Odegaard has admitted he was "very sore" after picking up a knock in Arsenal's draw against Brentford on Thursday, but has allayed fears of a serious injury. The Gunners captain received treatment straight after Brentford's equaliser in the 1-1 draw and was seen limping post-match.

Odegaard hurt himself while trying to challenge Keane Lewis-Potter inside the penalty area. He failed to stop the Brentford winger from scoring the equaliser and appeared in considerable pain as the medical staff rushed on to check on him.

The Norwegian managed to finish the game as Arsenal dropped two points to see their gap at the top of the Premier League reduced to four points. But Gunners fans were left worried about his fitness after Odegaard was seen struggling through the mixed zone.

He remains unlikely to start the FA Cup fourth-round tie against Wigan on Sunday - but writing in the matchday programme, he explained the situation.

“I picked up a bit of an injury when they (Brentford) scored their goal, but hopefully it’s not too bad,” Odegaard wrote. “We’ll see how it goes in the build-up to today’s game and over the next few days.

“I tried to clear the ball as it came down, but instead kicked into the player a bit, and ended up over-stretching my leg, which pinched the knee.

“I was able to carry on, but on Friday morning it was very sore, so I was worried of course, but thankfully it looks like it’s not too bad.”

While Odegaard is unlikely to be risked just three days on from a knock, Arsenal will be trying to beat Wigan and reach the fifth round, to continue their quest across all four competitions.

“Today it’s a change of focus in the FA Cup, which is a big target for us,” Odegaard added. “This group of players hasn’t had a run in this competition, and it’s definitely something we want to do. We know we can do better in this competition.

“In recent years, we’ve gone out quite early, so that’s something we want to make better and it’s another competition we want to go all the way in.”

Arsenal surprisingly haven't made it past the fourth round since 2020 and Mikel Arteta said: “It's an opportunity for the team, again, with another competition, and the history that we have related to that competition, it's amazing. We'll play at home again. I'm really excited to recover and go again.

“Every three days we are getting so used to playing different competitions, home or away, and we know what that competition means to the club, to ourselves, and go step by step.”
