Patriots predicted to add mercurial $122 million wide receiver for Drake Maye

When it comes to the wide receivers market this offseason, all eyes will be on Dallas Cowboys playmaker George Pickens.

Pickens is widely considered the most talented pending free agent at wide receiver in 2026. He's coming off a career year that saw him reach personal highs after breaking 1,400 yards and scoring nine touchdowns.

The Cowboys have made it clear they want to keep Pickens, but doing so would not make much sense for a Dallas team that won't have a lot of cap space and has major needs throughout the defense. But that doesn't mean the Cowboys are going to just let Pickens walk.

Reports suggest the franchise tag is a real possibility, and Dallas can turn around and jettison Pickens via trade after that to ensure it gets a draft pick for him rather than depending on the compensatory pick formula that may not work out in the Cowboys' favor should they find a way to be super aggressive in free agency.

In the event the Cowboys do let Pickens loose into the open market, FanSided's Jake Beckman predicts the New England Patriots will sign him in free agency.

"Hopefully (Pickens doesn't re-sign with Dallas), because there are more relevant teams that would be a lot more fun with Pickens on their roster," Beckman wrote. "That'd be a big add for a team that desperately needs pass catchers."

The Patriots are no doubt one of the teams that should be in the market for wide receiver help this offseason.

Stefon Diggs had a better-than-expected season in 2025, but he's also set to turn 33 in November and decline could come at any minute. Behind him, the Patriots have some promising young players, but none of them are proven.

Even if Diggs plays at his 2025 level in 2026, he's not the elite WR1 he once was, which means the Patriots could use a true No. 1 target for Drake Maye.

Pickens showed he can be that guy last season, and there's really nothing he can't do on the football field. He excels at all levels of the field, including deep, and Pickens is a fantastic contested catch guy.

The problem is that Pickens, who is projected by Spotrac to land a four-year, $122 million contract, is mercurial, at best.

Pickens had several behavioral issues during his days with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and while he was on his best behavior with the Cowboys in 2025, he still got himself benched and there were effort concerns in a few games.

If there's any head coach who can keep Pickens in line and get the most out of him, it's Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel.

But we also know Pickens is the kind of player who can create massive issues in the locker room, and that could very well deter New England from pursuing him.
