It’s mad to think where Liverpool might be if not for Dominik Szoboszlai’s performances this season, but a new Steven Gerrard claim might be taking it a step too far.
Szoboszlai was on target again in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Brighton, taking his tally of goal contributions for the season to 17.
He has blown us away with the level he has shown this season.
Arne Slot can trust him in virtually any position on the pitch, and he has turned into a real goal-threat for the Reds.
Who gets your vote for man of the match in an excellent win over Brighton, and why?

All that being said, Tony Cascarino might be jumping the gun with his recent Szoboszlai take.
Tony Cascarino says not much separates Dominik Szoboszlai and Steven Gerrard
The comparisons between Szoboszlai and one of Liverpool’s all-time greats are obvious.
Like Gerrard, Szoboszlai is an all-action number eight, a world-class ball striker and a player who covers every blade of grass on the pitch.
MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Szoboszlai has been tipped for Liverpool captain when Virgil van Dijk eventually hangs up his boots, and it’s not crazy to picture the Hungarian becoming one of the key figures at Anfield.
But Cascarino, speaking on talkSPORT, thinks he might already be at that level.
He says: “I’d love to know what Liverpool fans thought because I think him and Gerrard, there ain’t a lot in it. I mean Steven Gerrard at 25, 26, was amazing. He dragged the team a bit like Szoboszlai has done this season, but Liverpool did win the Champions League in 2005.

“And look, an outstanding if not the best ever Liverpool midfielder. Um, but I wondered how close Szoboszlai was to Gerrard. I’d just love to know if there’s Liverpool fans out there who would go, do you know what? Or, no, he’s not. You know, because I think they’re pretty close.”
Look, I love Szoboszlai, but this is coming far too soon. We’re not just talking about a Liverpool legend — Gerrard is one of, if not the best midfielder to play in the Premier League.
As outstanding as Szoboszlai has been, one top season doesn’t make a legend.
Liverpool have to stave off Real Madrid interest
Los Blancos are the bane of Liverpool’s existence.
The Spanish giants seem to be drawn to our best players, and Szoboszlai dreams of playing for Real Madrid.
If they were to come in for him, there’s a risk that he will go. That would be catastrophic for the Reds.
You’re Richard Hughes, how are you responding when Real Madrid call to ask about Szoboszlai?
What price are you quoting?

A new contract needs to be on the top of Liverpool’s agenda to tie down the Hungarian past his 2028 expiry. Leaving it too long risks another Trent situation.
That would simply be too much to take after how much pain Madrid have caused us in the past decade.
