Why Chelsea won’t be pursuing €70m elite central defender with 5 G/A this summer

Chelsea are apparently interested in signing Gleison Bremer from Juventus this summer, an expensive deal for an elite defender.

On a slow Sunday, rumour website CaughtOffside has sparked up with the claim that Chelsea are one of the teams interested in Gleison Bremer of Juventus. They say that the Blues would have to pay close to €70m for the former Torino man.

After missing last season with an ACL injury, the Brazilian has been back to his best for the Old Lady this season. There is a very good reason that so many teams are dreaming of signing him. His FotMob rating for the season is 7.29, and he’s even managed 5 goal contributions in his 14 starts in the league.

It’s a nice idea – he would be a big upgrade for our defensive options, most of whom have a lot of potential but are also very young. But it’s not a realistic move right now.

For the old Chelsea, this would have been a very reasonable rumour. He’s a top player at his peak age. Roman Abramovich would have been all over this. But the new Chelsea don’t work that way. A €70m deal for a 27 year old defender just isn’t going to happen under this regime, no matter the player’s quality.

There’s also a question of squad balance – Chelsea are really stocked with central defenders now following the recall of Mamadou Sarr. Aaron Anselmino will be back from his loan in the summer too. There are likely to be departures before arrivals of any kind at the back.

Pedro Neto’s move to the middle proved a success against Hull, and we’re interested to see what else Liam Rosenior has up his sleeve.

Friday night saw a domestic debut for Mamadou Sarr at Chelsea, and he knows he’s going to have limited time to impress before the summer.
