Liverpool remain linked with long-standing transfer target Nico Williams
Liverpool are once again linked with attacking superstar Nico Williams as troubles continue to bubble at Athletic Bilbao.
The Spanish international has been a target of Premier League clubs for years now and rumours are circling around a potential move away from La Liga this summer.
Last year, Williams signed a mega new ten-year contract extension with Athletic, snubbing a move to Barcelona for the second year running. Less than 12 months later though, the winger is now considering a move away, despite being under terms in Bilbao until 2035.
Liverpool ‘would be delighted’ to sign Nico Williams
According to a new report from El Nacional, which has been relayed via multiple outlets including TEAMtalk and social media account Transfer News Live, Liverpool are ‘prepared’ to pay the full €95 million (£83m) release clause in Williams’ contract.
The 23-year-old has been identified as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah, who could leave Anfield this summer amid ongoing links with Saudi Arabia. Tottenham Hotspur are also in the frame.
Williams is reportedly on a wage packet of £170,000 per week, which could be another factor in his immediate future. If Athletic do not qualify for European football next season, they will struggle to afford to pay Williams’ salary. The Bilbao side are currently ninth in the Spanish standings.
It has also been reported that Williams ‘regrets’ his decision to sign his recent contract extension with Athletic and he is now ‘reconsidering his future’. This has naturally put clubs on high alert, as despite his injury setbacks this season, he remains one of the most exciting wingers in the world.
The 2023/24 season saw Williams return eight goals and 18 assists in all competitions, which was impressive given Athletic finished fifth in the table.
