Newcastle United are expected to demand up to £95 million should a rival come bidding for the services of a Magpies winger.
Arsenal and Manchester City may both be well ahead of Liverpool in the Premier League title race this season but the Merseyside club could be in the process of landing a transfer blow to their top flight rivals.
The January transfer window may have slammed shut but it has not stopped the rumour mill from turning ahead of the summer. Liverpool are expected to invest come the end of the campaign having come up short so far this term.
The latest player to be linked with a move to Anfield is Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon. A fresh report from CaughtOffside claims that Liverpool are frontrunners in a potential transfer race for the 24-year-old.
Arsenal and Manchester City are also credited with interest in the player and are labelled as ‘named to watch in the race’. However, there is said to be a ‘clear signal’ that Liverpool are the ones to beat.
Liverpool lead the way in £95 million Premier League transfer race
The report believes that Gordon’s links to Merseyside would make a move to Liverpool favourable for the player but that Newcastle United will not be easy to bargain with. A fee as high as £95 million could be needed for the Magpies to green light a sale.
A move to Liverpool would be a controversial one for Gordon, who signed for Newcastle United from Everton on a £45 million move in January 2023. The winger is a product of the Everton academy and made 78 appearances for the club - the player’s history with the Toffees would make a switch to Liverpool a head-turning decision.
Gordon is a player who Arsenal and Mikel Arteta know well. Not only has the winger faced the Gunners ten times, but he scored the controversial goal in a 1-0 victory back in November 2023.
Arteta famously slammed VAR for ruling in Newcastle United’s favour on three VAR checks in the run-up to the goal, labelling the decision as ‘embarrassing’ and a ‘disgrace’. The Arsenal manager was later charged by the FA for those comments but was backed by Arsenal for defending the club.
At the time, Arsenal said the refereeing was "unacceptable" and that players, coaches and supporters all "deserve better".
