Former NBA star Kenny Thomas passes on lessons to local basketball

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Kenny Thomas, who was not born in New Mexico, still considers the state his home.

Thomas played for Albuquerque High under the guidance of legendary coach Jim Hulsman, who taught him life lessons beyond basketball.

“He made me shave my facial hair,” Thomas said. “I didn’t want to shave my peach fuzz but looking back, it’s one of those things to where he’s teaching me about life.”

Thomas embraced the discipline from his coach, similar to what he experienced as an only child with military parents. He moved from El Paso to Albuquerque for his senior year, a decision that led him to a state championship.

“I committed to UNM,” Thomas said. “I had a meeting up there one day, and it just felt right.”

Thomas’s college career at the University of New Mexico (UNM) was marked by numerous accolades, including multiple Western Athletic Conference awards and All-American status. He was later drafted 22nd overall in the 1999 NBA Draft, playing for the Houston Rockets, Philadelphia 76ers, and Sacramento Kings.

“This isn’t one of those places to where, I think they accepted me and they still do, but you have to pay your dues here,” Thomas said. “Things are just coming full circle now.”

Returning to Albuquerque High feels like a family reunion for Thomas. He shares his experiences and lessons with the next generation, encouraging them to understand their roles on the court.

“I’m pretty sure Coach is telling you guys to play your role,” Thomas said. “Not everybody can score. Not everybody’s gonna get all the shots. But the thing about it is you can play hard.”

Thomas continues to give back to the community, ensuring that the next generation has its own story to tell.
