Liverpool have been urged to agree a new contract with Dominik Szoboszlai amid renewed talk of a move to Real Madrid. Szoboszlai underlined his standing as the Reds' player of the season with a fantastic goal in the 3-0 FA Cup fourth round win over Brighton on Saturday evening.

It moved him on to double figures for the season and only two short of the best tally in a single campaign of his career, which was achieved at RB Leipzig in 2019/20.

Szoboszlai, a £60million signing in the summer of 2023, is approaching the last two years of his contract at Liverpool with talks having opened over a new deal and the player keen to stay.

However, Hungary boss Marco Rossi was quoted in Madrid-based sports news outlet Marca over the weekend claiming Szoboszlai's one dream was to play for Real Madrid.

And that has prompted former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given to implore Liverpool to extend the Anfield commitment of the Hungary national team captain.

“He’s been the standout player for Liverpool all season," said Given. “I think they’ve dipped as a team, obviously they’re champions, but this guy feels like he’s gone up a level if anything. He is a star performer.

“You don’t want to compare him to any people at Liverpool, but you think of a Steven Gerrard when he’s spraying those balls around the pitch. He is a special talent this guy."

Speaking to Match Of The Day, Given added: “I suppose a worry for Liverpool fans, I think his Hungarian coach has said this week his dream is to play for Real Madrid.

"If I was Liverpool looking at that, I’d be a bit disappointed, but at the same time, I’d try and tie him down.”
