Chelsea’s lower rated defenders could be sold – but Blues likely to break that pattern for one

The stats show two clear first choice options for Chelsea in defence – and highlights two players who could be sold.

Chelsea added Mamadou Sarr to their central defensive options in the January transfer window, and still have Levi Colwill to return from injury.

That will leave them pretty overstocked at the back, and there are rumours swirling today that they are likely to sell some of their options at the back. But who will it be? Let’s look at the stats.

By WhoScored average rating, the answers are clear. Wesley Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah have been the best pair this season, and that’s evident from the eye test too. Both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior have picked them when fit. They both have average ratings above 7.

Tosin is the next highest, with a 6.8. Then comes Benoit Badiashile on a meagre 6.27.

Colwill hasn’t played this season, but it’s interesting to see his score last season was a 6.74. However, his age and potential mean that we reckon he’s still kept on while Badiashile or Tosin are sold.

It would be very interesting to see how Colwill would score if he was playing alongside Fofana. We reckon he would have been boosted up to a 7+. Playing alongside the Frenchman, when he’s fit, makes everyone look good.

New man Mamadou Sarr also will have limited chances to impress before the end of the season.

If you look beyond the stats, we also just thought through the logic of who might be going in our post here. The answers are not exactly the same.

Another player being linked to the Blues is Murillo of Nottingham Forest. He’s got a lot of positives in his game, but one big weakness too.
