Leeds United handed major boost in pursuit of £62.5k a week Manchester City ace

James Trafford

Leeds United thought they had solved most of their squad issues during the summer transfer window. The club brought in 10 new players before they made their Premier League return.

Coming from the Championship, many around the club knew some players would have to be replaced and upgraded if the team is to stand a chance in the top flight. Over £100 million was spent, and a new goalkeeper, defenders and midfielders were added to the team. Noah Okafor, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha were also added to the attack.

Overall most of the summer signings have had a huge influence on the team. In defence, Jaka Bijol has been solid and so has Gabriel Gudmundsson. Sean Longstaff and Anton Stach have been great additions, and the attacking trio of Okafor, Nmecha and Calvert-Lewin have done the job in front of goal.

One signing that has stood out for the wrong reasons is Lucas Perri; the Brazilian goalkeeper joined as the club wanted to solve their issues in goal. Last season, Illan Meslier almost threw away the promotion charge, and Daniel Farke stepped in, benching him for the rest of the season. Since Perri arrived, the former Lyon man has failed to keep his place in goal. Errors this season have seen Karl Darlow become the preferred option in the last few weeks.

News has now emerged that a long-term transfer target could become available in the summer. James Trafford made some controversial comments after Manchester City’s FA Cup win on Saturday, prompting reports that he could leave this summer:

“I’ve obviously got a contract, so I don’t know what happens next season.

“I just know that I’ll just take it a day at a time and try and improve.”

Elland Road is a realistic landing spot

Trafford joined Manchester City this summer hoping to be the club’s first choice, before they signed Gianluigi Donnarumma later in the transfer window. The England stopper has now been made second choice, and has solely played in cup competitions since. With the lack of playing time, and the ambition in his career, it could be likely that he leaves after just one season.

Elland Road is a very realistic option for him – Leeds have been long-term admirers of the goalkeeper since his Burnley days. But the Whites will have to make sure they secure another season in the Premier League before even convincing him to sign a deal. As it stands, the door is open and it will be up to the club to make sure they are in the perfect position in the summer.
