Manchester United are plotting a shock and ambitious move for Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.
United are in the market to sign a new midfielder in the summer transfer window and Mac Allister, 27, has been identified as a potential target. Old Trafford bosses are thought to be keeping a close eye on the Argentina World Cup winner, who has two-and-a-half years left on his contract at Liverpool, as per The Mirror.
Speculation has mounted around Mac Allister's future at Anfield, with the former Brighton man enduring a tough season which has seen him struggle to find his best form. He did, however, produce a much-improved performance during Liverpool's 3-0 win against Brighton in the FA Cup on Saturday.
As well as Mac Allister, United have expressed an interest in signing Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, Brighton's Carlos Baleba and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton.
While United want to lure Mac Allister from Liverpool, it's a task that appears highly improbable at this stage, due to the bitter rivalry between the two clubs.
There has been several cases of players who have played for both United and Liverpool in their careers, including Michael Owen and Paul Ince, but not one has moved directly between them since 1964. That occurred when Phil Chisnall made the controversial switch from United to Liverpool.

It remains to be seen whether Mac Allister would actually be prepared to leave the Reds, but he has made it clear he would be open to playing in Spain before the end of his career.
The Argentine has been long linked with a move to Real Madrid, who are looking to strengthen in midfield this summer.
Even if United know they would have little chance of securing Mac Allister's services, at least unless the club earn Champions League qualification, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen to keep every option open and would want to sign the Liverpool superstar if he became available.

Mac Allister made the £55million move to Liverpool from Brighton in 2023 and helped them win the Premier League title last season.
During his time at the Reds, he has scored 17 times and added 17 assists in 132 matches.
