A former NFL Pro Bowler has died "unexpectedly" at 54 years old.
Tre Johnson, a former NFL Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro, died on vacation with family. His wife, Irene Johnson, shared the tragic news on social media. She released a statement on his passing on Facebook.
"It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my husband, Tre' Johnson, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly ... during a brief family trip," she wrote. "His four children, Chloe, EJ, EZ and Eden, extended family, friends, and I are devastated and in shock."
Johnson, a second round pick by Washington in 1994, played in the league until 2002. He spent most of his career with Washington, save for one season in Cleveland in 2001.
Johnson starred collegiately at Temple. He was the No. 31 overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft.
The 6-foot-2, 328-pound guard was a second-team All-Pro in 1999.
He went on to become a history teacher in Maryland. His wife revealed that recent health issues had forced him to take a leave of absence.
Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
May he rest in peace.
