The Washington Commanders have some work to do this offseason. The team followed up its surprise run to the NFC Championship Game in 2024 by missing the playoffs entirely in 2025, which prompted head coach Dan Quinn to make some widespread changes to his coaching staff. Injuries certainly didn’t help the team last season, but Quinn isn’t using that as an excuse for his team’s poor play.

With Quinn’s coaching staff nearly complete, the team will soon turn its attention to free agency. Before they could do that, though, the Commanders received some devastating news regarding one of their former players, All-Pro offensive lineman Tre’ Johnson, who recently died unexpectedly at the age of 54.

Johnson was selected by Washington in the second round of the 1994 NFL Draft, but he didn’t initially start for the team. After initially being viewed as a tackle, the coaching staff eventually decided to move Johnson inside to guard, as he spent the majority of his career playing at both the left and right guard positions.

In 1995, Johnson earned a starting job for the Commanders, and he never looked back. He would remain a key piece of the team’s offensive line for the next five years, with his best season coming in 1999, when he earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro Second Team honors. That ended up being the highlight of his career, though, as injuries limited Johnson to just seven games over the next two seasons.

Johnson would spend the 2001 season with the Cleveland Browns before returning to Washington for one final year in 2002. In his post-playing career, Johnson became a high school history teacher, although health issues recently forced him to take a leave of absence. During a recent vacation with his family, Johnson passed away unexpectedly at the age of 54, leaving his friends, family, and the Commanders franchise in shock.

“Former NFL offensive lineman Tre’ Johnson, an All-Pro with Washington in 1999, died on Sunday during a family trip, his wife posted on social media. He was 54,” NBC News reported.

Johnson’s death has come as a shock to the Commanders and the rest of the NFL world. His former team has extended its condolences to Johnson’s family, and they will aim to support them throughout these trying times. Some things are bigger than football, and this situation is undoubtedly one of them, as the team will work on providing support in any way possible.

As for the offseason, Washington will be busy looking for ways to build around star quarterback Jayden Daniels. Keeping him healthy has to be the team’s primary goal moving forward, as it’s going to be tough to consistently win games without him on the field. The Commanders have a solid foundation in place, but the work they are able to do over the next few months will likely determine whether or not they are able to put together a bounce-back campaign in 2026.
