Mikael Silvestre has backed Michael Carrick to become Manchester United's next permanent manager.

Carrick has taken charge on an interim basis until the end of the season and the former United midfielder has made an impressive start, winning four of his first five games. United bosses will make a decision in the summer on who will be the full-time replacement for Ruben Amorim, who was sacked last month.

And Silvestre reckons Carrick is in pole position to get the job. He told Sky Bet: "Michael Carrick will be considered for the job if he maintains that Champions League spot, and if the players believe in what he's doing.

"He's in the best position right now because it's a long interview process for the permanent role. Every training session and every game is an opportunity for him to show his worth.

"He's got nothing to lose because he came in as a caretaker. He knows the dressing room, the players, and the club, and that gives him an advantage over someone coming from outside.

"If you're talking about a long-term project, he's a young manager and you can expect him to keep evolving and developing. He's put himself a great position with his results, but he needs to stay focused and keep working."

Silvestre, meanwhile, has backed Arsenal to go on and create history this season by winning the Quadruple. He added: "The last team to do something special was Manchester City with the treble. "Why not aim high? Who says Arsenal can't win the quadruple?

"The ambition should be to win everything. You take it competition by competition, game by game.

"Talking about a quadruple in February is unrealistic. If you win one trophy, you put it in the bag and move on to the next challenge.

"I still think Arsenal are favourites for the Champions League though. They have depth, and their style of play suits the tournament.

"They can control games, break low blocks, and transition quickly. They have different ways to hurt teams, and I think they could go all the way."
