Bayern Munich chief confirms he wanted to sign Jeremy Jacquet

Liverpool’s capture of Florian Wirtz is still a sore point in Munich and it looks like the record German champions are still reeling.

Liverpool’s capture of Florian Wirtz is still a sore point in Munich. Bayern had earmarked the Germany international as a long-term cornerstone for their next cycle, only to watch Liverpool move quicker, put the money down and walk away with one of Europe’s most coveted playmakers.

The saga ended with Wirtz posing in red rather than red and white, and those fresh memories of being beaten to his signature will inevitably colour any Bayern reflections on Liverpool’s current squad.

And it looks like the record German champions are still reeling, as they have now commented on Jeremy Jacquet’s move to Anfield – with the Frenchman arriving at the end of the season.

Sitting down for an interview with SPORT1, Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl revealed that the Bavarian giants were keen on Jacquet but were not willing to pay the money that Liverpool did to secure the Frenchman. Answering a question on Dayot Upamecano’s recent extension, he said:

“Of course, the contract extensions cost money. But it costs even more if I have to buy players of the quality of Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, or Dayot Upamecano – if you can even find them.”

“For example, Jérémy Jacquet from Stade Rennes would have been a great player for us. But when we see that he’s going to Liverpool at the age of 19 for a reported €70m, we have to consider what’s best for Bayern Munich.”

“And our answer was to pursue Dayot’s contract extension. He knows the club, is in his prime, and is one of the best center-backs in the world. From both a sporting and financial perspective, it’s the right decision. That’s why I’m calling it an “internal transfer.”

In the current market, what Liverpool have put on the table for Jacquet is simply the going rate for a highly‑rated defender with his ceiling. Top European clubs are now routinely shelling out big money for potential as much as proven output.

And Bayern can hardly complain about that inflation. They were more than happy to push towards the €70m bracket for a 28‑year‑old Luis Díaz, accepting that this is what it costs to secure a Champions League‑level attacker in his peak years.
