The Chiefs have immediately been linked to Tyreek Hill after he got released by the Dolphins

The Kansas City Chiefs have their work cut out for them this offseason. After making it to at least the AFC Championship Game in each of Patrick Mahomes‘ first seven seasons as the team’s starting quarterback, the Chiefs failed to even qualify for the playoffs in 2025. Beyond that, Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL late in the year that could force him to miss time in the upcoming campaign.

Despite that, the expectation is that Mahomes will be able to play next season, and Kansas City has been busy preparing for his eventual return. On Monday morning, the Miami Dolphins released Mahomes’ former star wide receiver, Tyreek Hill, leading to Kansas City immediately getting linked to a reunion with the All-Pro pass catcher.

A fifth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Hill spent the first six years of his career with the Chiefs, and he quickly turned himself into one of the most explosive playmakers in the game. Hill was a Pro Bowler in all six seasons with Kansas City, while also earning three All-Pro First Team selections and a Super Bowl championship.

A contract dispute led to Hill getting dealt from K.C. to Miami after the 2021 campaign, and that’s where he’s spent the past four seasons. Hill remained productive for the Dolphins, even with their offense cratering thanks to Tua Tagovailoa’s erratic play. He won’t have to worry about that anymore, though, as he’s free to join whichever teams he wants on the open market.

The Chiefs have already reunited with their old offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy, this offseason, and a reunion with Hill could now be in store. Hill already publicly expressed his desire to return to Kansas City on social media, and now that he’s been released, the Chiefs have emerged as the heavy favorite to sign their former superstar playmaker in free agency.

Should the Chiefs Sign Tyreek Hill in Free Agency?

Tyreek Hill

GettyNFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the Miami Dolphins are releasing former All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

Hill’s talent is undeniable, but there are a couple of other factors to take into account when considering signing him. For starters, Hill only played in four games last season before he suffered a left knee dislocation, with the injury immediately ending his year. Beyond that, there are off-field concerns with Hill, which may become tougher to ignore as he begins to reach the end of his career.

Hill is working hard to get himself back on the field, but there’s no timetable on his return, meaning nobody knows if he’s going to play in 2026, which could make this entire discussion a moot point. If he is going to play, a reunion with the Chiefs makes too much sense for it not to happen. K.C. needs a big play threat, and Hill is open to returning. Anything can happen in the NFL, but it’d be a surprise if Hill landed anywhere but Kansas City now that he’s a free agent.
