Arsenal are in the hunt for a young Real Madrid defender. The reports say Mikel Arteta has made 19-year-old Víctor Valdepeñas one of his top targets for the summer. The versatile Spanish teen could add fresh strength to the Gunners’ back line, which has been hit hard by injuries this season.
Who is Víctor Valdepeñas?
Víctor Valdepeñas is a 19-year-old centre-back from Spain. He plays mainly for Real Madrid’s second team, Real Madrid Castilla. But he can also play left-back – a big plus for managers who like flexible players.
He is fast, strong and loves to carry the ball forward. Scouts call him an “explosive ball carrier” with great composure on the ball. He has played for Spain’s Under-19 team and is seen as one of Madrid’s brightest academy talents.
Valdepeñas made his first senior appearance in December. He started at left-back in a La Liga win over Alavés. The team won 2-1, and he did well despite not being in his favourite position. His contract runs until 2029, with a release clause reported around £43 million or more.

Why Arsenal Want Him
Arsenal have faced a long list of injuries in defence this year. The players like William Saliba, Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori have missed games. Mikel Arteta needs more options, especially for the busy run-in as they chase the Premier League title, Champions League and more.
The reports from the Spanish newspaper AS say Arsenal have the strongest interest in Víctor Valdepeñas. They have been scouting him closely since late last year. Arteta likes his tactical intelligence and ability to step into midfield during build-up play. This fits perfectly with Arsenal’s possession-based style.
The move would be for the summer, giving the young defender time to develop. With a Spanish-speaking manager and several Spanish-speaking players already at the club, settling in north London could be smoother.

Valdepeñas who can play at left-back or center-back, is also attracting serious interest from AC Milan and several Bundesliga clubs.

Competition from Other Top Clubs
Arsenal are leading the race right now, but others are close behind. AC Milan have wanted Valdepeñas for a long time and could make a move soon. In Germany, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund have followed him since 2024 and are ready to join the fight.
This could turn into a real bidding war. Real Madrid do not like selling their best young players cheaply. They often add buy-back clauses or demand huge fees to keep control.
Valdepeñas’ Situation at Madrid
At Real Madrid, first-team chances are hard to come by. Valdepeñas is stuck behind senior stars and has played mostly with Castilla. He wants regular football to grow, and a move abroad could give him that.
Still, the Bernabéu is his dream home. He will only leave for the right project – one that offers minutes and a clear path to the top.
Arsenal’s Summer Plans
This season Arsenal sit top of the Premier League and are still alive in multiple cups. But the injury crisis has shown the squad needs depth. Signing a cheap, high-potential defender like Valdepeñas would be smart business.
No formal offer has been made yet. Talks could start after the season ends. If Arsenal win the race, it would be another example of Arteta’s eye for young talent – just like with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.
What Happens Next?
Everything depends on the next few months. Arsenal must keep winning to stay attractive. Real Madrid must decide if they want to cash in or keep fighting for the teen.
A deal would cost big money, but it could be worth it. Valdepeñas has the tools to become a Premier League star. With Arteta’s guidance, he could shine for years.
