Highly-touted former Steelers coach lands new job with AFC foe

Former [Pittsburgh Steelers](https://www.pennlive.com/steelers/) outside linebackers coach [Denzel Martin](https://www.pennlive.com/steelers/2026/01/cowboys-interview-fast-rising-pittsburgh-steelers-defensive-coach.html) is joining the Los Angeles Chargers as their assistant outside linebackers coach, according to multiple reports.

The Steelers opted to hire Texas Tech outside linebackers coach C.J. Ah You as Martin’s replacement. They will also have former Montana State defensive coordinator Shawn Howe on their coaching staff, and he has focused on outside linebackers in the past.

Martin joined the Steelers in 2016 as a scouting assistant before becoming the assistant outside linebackers coach in 2020. He interviewed with the Dallas Cowboys to be their outside linebackers coach.

Martin was officially elevated to a proper position coach in 2023, where he has held the outside linebackers coach title for the last three seasons.

Martin played his college football at Missouri, and started out as a recruiting assistant for the Tigers before making the leap to the NFL as a coach.

His roommate was former Steelers outside linebacker Markus Golden, who he ended up coaching while Golden was in Pittsburgh for one season in 2023.

Over his time as coach, he oversaw the development of Nick Herbig and Jack Sawyer, both players who have improved throughout their time with the Steelers under Martin’s guidance.
