The Patriots are being urged to go after Tyreek Hill
On Jan. 16, the Miami Dolphins made thedecision to release Tyreek Hillafter four seasons with the team. Hill was acquired prior to the 2022 season in a blockbuster trade that saw the Dolphins give up five draft picks in order to land the All-Pro wide receiver who came over from Kansas City.
As a member of the Dolphins, Hill thrived statistically as he had the two best receiving seasons of his career, where he totaled over 1,700 receiving yards. No player in NFL history had recorded over 1,700 receiving yards in back-to-back seasons until Hill did so with Miami. However, team success was not there the way Dolphins fans would have wanted when the trade occurred.
Despite making the postseason in back-to-back seasons, the Dolphins fizzled out in the Wild Card round both times in 2022 and 2023. Perhaps most painfully for Hill, in 2023, Miami was eliminated by the team that traded him away. After eliminating the Dolphins, the Chiefs won their second consecutive Super Bowl on a team that largely built its defense using the five draft picks the Dolphins had given them. Miami would not return to the playoffs with Hill as they had losing seasons in 2024 and 2025 before releasing Hill.
Robert Griffin III Urges Patriots to Sign Tyreek Hill
Hill will now officially be a free agent, and if teams clear him physically following his dislocated knee he suffered in 2025, he could be highly sought after. One potential option that former Pro Bowl quarterback Robert Griffin III suggested was the New England Patriots. He posted on X, “The New England Patriots need to sign Tyreek Hill. Drake Maye was the best deep ball thrower in football this year. If Tyreek Hill gets back to 90% of what he was, the Patriots get a massive mismatch chess piece on their board.”
Despite making the Super Bowl, the Patriots still lack true mismatch playmakers, as only Stefon Diggs went over 1,000 receiving yards. Even without top-notch talent at wide receiver, as Griffin mentioned, Drake Maye was among the best deep passers in the NFL. He led the NFL in yards per pass attempt and was third in the NFL in yards per completion. If Hill were to return to his past form, he could be a game-changing playmaker for Miami’s division rival.
One fan replied that the Patriots should not go after Hill due to their primary need being the offensive line. However,Griffin thought differently and replied, “Special speed like Tyreek’s is rare and makes it easier for the QB to throw the deep ball with anticipation even without great protection. Patriots need to fix the o-line. Tyreek makes it easier.”
Miami Dolphins Upcoming Free Agency
Ultimately for the Dolphins, Hill became a luxury they could no longer afford. With a $51 million cap hit looming under his current contract, the decision to release the veteran receiver coming off a major injury was an easy one. That does not mean Dolphins fans will be happy to see him go, and they will be less happy to see him go to a division rival.
Having to face Hill twice next season would be a daunting task for Miami’s defense. The Dolphins currently have a need at cornerback, as their top two cornerbacks during the 2025 season are both set to hit free agency in less than a month. WhileRasul Douglas did express that he wanted to return to the Dolphins, Miami may want him to be on a cheaper deal. The moves the Dolphins have made so far indicate that they will be undergoing a youth movement.
