Things spiraling out of control for Liverpool player–National team now in doubt

Federico Chiesa

FRANKFURT AM MAIN, GERMANY – OCTOBER 22: Federico Chiesa of Liverpool FC during the UEFA Champions League match between Eintracht Frankfurt and Liverpool

During the January transfer window, Sport Witness covered Federico Chiesa’s Liverpool situation closely..

Juventus were pushing to bring him back to Turin but a deal wasn’t feasible due to the Reds’ demands. Liverpool wanted the attacker’s permanent exit, if he were to keave, and it wasn’t something which suited Juve financially.

Even if Chiesa was willing to take a wage cut, Liverpool’s stance on the exit proved decisive.

Since then, the Italian’s situation at Merseyside hasn’t changed. He is yet to play more than ten minutes in a single Premier League game in 2026. Chiesa started against Brighton in the FA Cup at the weekend but wasn’t among the goals.

Now, there are doubts about his future with the Italy national team.

Liverpool situation can mean Italy exclusion

The Azzurri are yet to qualify for the FIFA World Cup and have to play two more games to make it through. Those games will take place next month and Calciomercato appear doubtful about Chiesa’s inclusion.

The outlet speak of manager Rino Gattuso having a dinner meeting with the attacker about his situation. There is a good relationship between the two parties and discussions are ongoing but the Azzurri boss doesn’t want to take any risks.

Chiesa is being evaluated and things are far from certain. In the past, he rejected call-ups to the national side and this was made public by Gattuso himself.

Now, Italy are at a crucial juncture in their modern history and Gattuso wants guarantees. He is looking for players who are fully motivated and the Liverpool player is not a sure shot for selection.

Liverpool future also in doubt

Calciomercato state Chiesa will leave Anfield in the summer. The outlet are also certain that Liverpool’s failure to sign a replacement was the reason he couldn’t leave in January. At that point, Juventus and West Ham were keen but a deal didn’t materialise.

In the summer, Slot’s side will want between €15m and €20m to sell him. Chiesa prefers a return to Italy, even if his current wage would be difficult to afford for Serie A clubs.
