Luis Díaz spent more than three years at Liverpool and left Anfield for Bayern Munich in July 2025.
Prior to joining the Bundesliga winners, Barcelona showed interest in the forward. The La Liga winners decided against making advances and ended up signing Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United last summer.
Barcelona’s inability to sign the former Liverpool star allowed Bayern Munich to secure his services.
Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeneß has sent praise the 29-year-old’s agent for getting him out of Liverpool. Tuesday’s edition of Bild have an interview with Hoeneß, which is their first in almost 10 years.
Agent’s key role in Liverpool exit
Hoeneß talked about the work put in by the Colombia international’s representative to help the Bundesliga winners sign him from the Reds, when discussing Dayot Upamecano’s renewal.
Four days ago, the France centre-back committed his future to the Bavarian club by signing an extension until 2030. His agents tried to use interest from other clubs to secure a bonus as part of the renewal. This clearly didn’t please Hoeneß.
“Do you know what’s so disastrous about that? In Upamecano’s case, the agents either wanted to drive up our price or push him to another club, and as a thank you, we were supposed to pay them a signing bonus. That’s a contradiction in terms that we shouldn’t tolerate any longer,” he said.
Vincent Kompany’s side initially withdrew their written offer before Upamecano himself brought the deal back on track. Bild asked whether Bayern Munich’s ‘no’ had the desired impact on the defender.
Responding to that, Hoeneß explained: “That word ‘no’ will be heard more often in the future. We’re all in agreement on that at the club. We might even put one or two agents – if they behave unfairly – on a list and tell them that we will no longer sign players they represent. That would be the next step.”
Liverpool made exit difficult
When asked whether there are any ‘counterexamples’ to the Upamecano case, Hoeneß mentioned Díaz’s signing from Arne Slot’s side. Bayern Munich are pleased to pay agent commission in such cases.
“Yes. Luis Díaz’s agent, for instance, fought hard to get him from Liverpool, which was very difficult. He gave everything for his client and still always spoke fairly with Liverpool. We’re happy to pay someone like that,” he added.
Last September, the South American said he wants to win every competition with Bayern Munich.
Kompany’s side are leading the league table, finished second in the Champions League and made it to the DFB-Pokal semi-final. Díaz has played a big part, managing 19 goals and 15 assists from 32 matches.
