'Crazy to say': Wayne Rooney explains why Arne Slot could be sacked and why he's not right for Liverpool

Arne Slot has seen his future at Liverpool called into question for much of the season so far.

Back in late 2025 amid a run of nine defeats in 12 across all competitions, fans wanted Slot gone.

An unbeaten run, which was littered with draws against weaker opponents, then followed.

But with Xabi Alonso still being linked and Liverpool only just ending a run of one win in seven Premier League matches, speculation around the Dutchman remains.

Jamie Carragher thinks Slot will be sacked unless they make it into the Champions League this season.

Wayne Rooney on why Liverpool could sack Arne Slot

Now, Carragher has been speaking alongside Wayne Rooney on the latest episode of the Overlap Fan Debate.

The ex-Red asked Rooney for his thoughts on Slot, who suggested that the 47-year-old just doesn’t have the ‘aura’ to be Liverpool manager.

Like Carragher, the former Manchester United striker then echoed that the manager will likely be gone unless they qualify for the Champions League this term.

He said: “It’s strange for me. I’ve met him a few times, seems a nice fella but I just don’t think for Liverpool he’s got that aura about him and maybe this is because you’ve just come off the back of Jurgen Klopp and it’s going to be a bit difficult for anyone to have that.

“But I just don’t think there’s that aura about him and I’ve worked with Dutch managers and I know they can be difficult at times.

“But I think if they don’t make top five, I think he’ll be gone for sure, which is crazy to say that he’s just won the Premier League.”

Liverpool’s predicted Premier League finish

While not confirmed yet, the Premier League will likely be awarded five Champions League places for the 2026/27 season.

At present, Liverpool are sixth in the table and three points adrift of fourth-place Manchester United with a four-worse goal difference.

They are just two points off Chelsea ahead of the latest gameweek as well, so there’s still a good chance the Reds can climb back into the Champions League places with a good run of form.

Right now, despite sitting behind the Blues and Man Utd, Opta’s supercomputer actually predicts Liverpool will end the 2025/26 Premier League campaign in fourth place.

They give the Merseyside outfit a 34.99% chance of qualifying for Europe’s premier competition next term.
