Opinion: Enzo Fernandez’s xG shows his transformation into goalscoring midfielder is now fully complete

Enzo Fernandez has been one of Chelsea’s top performers under new manager Liam Rosenior.

Overall, Fernandez has had a very good season, with the midfielder having also shone while Enzo Maresca was still at the club.

Fernandez’s game started to change under Chelsea’s former head coach, and the team have really benefitted as a result.

The 25-year-old has found himself among the goals this term and should perhaps have even more to his name.

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior and Enzo Fernández share a hug following a recent victory; the Argentine midfielder has hailed the 'freedom in the final third' granted by Rosenior as a key factor in his improved form during the 2025/26 season.

Enzo Fernandez’s xG higher than any other Premier League midfielder

Fernandez will be pleased with his contribution in front of goal this season. Across all competitions, he has scored 11 times.

In the Premier League, Fernandez has netted on eight occasions after making 25 appearances, which is a solid return for a player in his position.

According to WhoScored, he also has an xG of 9.80, which is the highest among the division’s midfielders.

It means the Argentine should have actually scored more goals by this point of the campaign, but the fact that his xG is almost 10 is a very positive sign.

Who deserves the credit for Enzo Fernandez’s recent success?

Fernandez is finding himself in the right positions and getting good chances. That rarely happened in his first two seasons at Stamford Bridge.

Ultimately, the above shows how much of a goal threat Fernandez has become after being given a different midfield role in the team.

Fernandez himself has spoken about Rosenior and the freedom that he has given him on the pitch, which he is clearly making the most of.

Enzo Fernandez now one of the best midfielders in the Premier League

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher recently discussed Fernandez, hailing him as one of the top players in English football right now.

There is no denying that, with the Argentina international perhaps being the best midfielder in the Premier League at this moment.

Fernandez can score goals, create chances, play a variety of passes and receive the ball in awkward situations. The World Cup winner is the dream No.8.
