Latest on Kyrie Irving return status: Mavs star to have strong say on final decision

Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving has been given a strong say on his preference to either give himself more time to recover from the surgery or test himself in a few games this spring.

Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving will have the final say on when he returns to the court this season.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Irving has been given significant input regarding whether he prefers to return this spring or wait until the start of next season.

"The June draft, of course, is the last draft that Dallas has control of its first-round pick between 2026 and 2031, so there is certainly a strong case from the team perspective for Irving, who turns 34 on March 23, to sit out the entire season now," Stein says.

"Yet I'm told that the decision will be a collaborative one... with Irving given a strong say on his preference to either give himself more time to recover from the surgery or test himself in a few games this spring," he adds.

On his Twitch livestream on Saturday, the Dallas Mavericks star revealed that he will drop his latest recovery news and playing availability right after the All-Star Break.

Although some recent reports suggest that Irving will not play this season, regardless of whether he's been cleared to return from his ACL injury.

The Mavericks have been projected not to continue competing this year and embrace a losing campaign. They are currently 12th in the West with a 19-35 record, 7.0 games away from the Conference's final Play-In spot.

When healthy last season, Irving averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists in 50 games with the Mavericks.
