Dominik Szoboszlai has earned himself comparisons to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard as he continues to perform at a high level for the Reds.
Szoboszlai added to his goal tally against Brighton and Hove Albion over the weekend, seeing Arne Slot’s side book themselves a place in the FA Cup fifth round versus Wolves.
Following the clash, the Hungarian has, as expected, come in for much praise.

Gary Lineker commented on the midfielder’s form as a key factor behind improvements at Liverpool.
Elsewhere, Tony Cascarino made a rather bold claim and suggested that Szoboszlai is ‘pretty close’ to Steven Gerrard.
There’s certainly an argument that the midfielder has been Liverpool’s best player this season, but is he really close to matching one of the club’s all-time greats?
Steven Gerrard’s best Liverpool season vs Dominik Szoboszlai
Szoboszlai has proven himself to be a great utility player this season, often being deployed out of position at right-back or on the wing when Mohamed Salah was out of the team.
MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
So far this term, he has found the back of the net 10 times and provided seven assists.
That works out at a goal contribution every 184 minutes, or every two games, which is not bad considering how many matches he’s had to start or be moved into a full-back role.
He is still, however, some way off matching Gerrard’s best-ever seasons as a Liverpool player.
In 2005/06, the Englishman managed to score 23 and assist 15 in 53 matches across all competitions, which worked out at a contribution every 111.4 minutes.
The midfielder was similarly prolific in 2008/09, netting 24 and assisting 13 in 44 clashes in all competitions.
That staggering record gave the former England international an average of one goal contribution every 95.2 minutes.
But while Szoboszlai will probably never come close to matching those levels, he could replicate Gerrard’s Liverpool stint in another way.

What Arne Slot thinks about Dominik Szoboszlai
Gerrard was one of the main leaders at Liverpool for many, many years.
In 2025/26, the Reds have lacked senior figures to lead by example during difficult periods, but Szoboszlai is starting to show signs he could be a future Liverpool captain.
Even Slot has now discussed that possibility post-Brighton. He said: “Yes, but he’s still young. I think he has a lot of attributes already, especially when it comes to leading by example.
“But there’s still a step to make in terms of leadership, being vocal, being a voice in the dressing room if I compare him to Virgil [van Dijk], which is completely normal because Virgil is 34 and has seen probably James Milner or Jordan Henderson and these players.
“So it’s really good for Dominik that he sees Virgil as well. That would be a next step for him, to be as vocal and as loud as Virgil is.
“That comes with time, I think, but for all the other things, he has a lot to become a very influential player for Liverpool and you could call that a leader.”
