Jayden Danns set for latest fitness check after 5 months out for Liverpool

Jayden Danns is set for another fitness check this week as he pushes for a comeback nearly five months after sustaining a serious hamstring injury.

Danns made a 15-minute cameo off the bench in the Carabao Cup win over Southampton in late September, but Liverpool supporters have not seen him since after his injury with the U21s.

He has experienced setbacks throughout his recovery, but has been working on the outdoor pitches at the club’s training base as he builds himself back to full fitness.

Updates on Danns’ progress have been sparse, but U21s head coach Rob Page told Redmen TV, after a 4-3 win over the weekend, that the striker is due a fitness check on Tuesday.

“Jayden is doing really well,” Page said. “We do have a medical meeting on Tuesday, so I’ll know more then to what level he’s at.

“Every morning he’s out on the grass, and he’s getting better and better, stronger and stronger every day.”

Danns was expected back to full fitness at the end of last year, and thus it has been a long road for the 20-year-old, who has had a torrid time with injury over the last couple of years.

Liverpool will, therefore, naturally be cautious with easing Danns back into a full programme, but Page’s update offers hope that he is nearing the end of a long-awaited return to action.

Arne Slot admitted Jayden Danns would have been in Liverpool squad

It will have been a frustrating time for Danns having seen opportunities at first-team level pass him by due to injuries elsewhere, with the visit of Barnsley, for example, having been viewed as a fixture he was primed for.

And Arne Slot acknowledged the 20-year-old would have been in his plans if not for his injury when he spoke to the media at the end of January.

“Jayden, if he would have been fit he would definitely have been in the squad. But unfortunately he isn’t and we don’t expect him back today or tomorrow as well,” he said in a press conference before the 4-1 win over Newcastle.

“He’s been very unlucky in his career until now, but the good thing about him is that he has a great mentality. He’s always fighting himself back after setbacks – and he has unfortunately had quite a lot.

“This would have been a great moment for him. With Alexander Isak being out and the quality he has, he could have been with us and helped us in certain moments.

“But unfortunately for him, and also for us, he’s faced a lot of injuries in his career until now.

“He will fight back and come back and the world will get to know him the moment he’s fit again.”
