Browns trade for C.J. Stroud?: Why Todd McShay's idea is a nightmare for Cleveland

NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay sent the football world on fire by suggesting Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud could be on the move. Naturally, the rumor mill immediately linked the Cleveland Browns to being one of the teams to look into acquiring the young star.

While I love the upside of Stroud, a blockbuster QB deal with the Texans doesn't feel like a dream...it looks like a recurring nightmare.

The real question is: would GM Andrew Berry and Jimmy Haslam actually be "suckered" into another massive, multi-first-round pick trade with Houston? We’ve seen this movie before, and it ended with the most disastrous trade/contract combo in NFL history.

Deshaun Watson

The Deshaun Watson Shadow

Let’s get real. The Browns are still tethered to Deshaun Watson and his fully guaranteed albatross of a deal. Even with a likely restructure this offseason, Watson is set to carry dead cap money north of $100-million spread over 2027 and 2028. Cleveland is essentially stuck in a financial straightjacket. Bringing in Stroud doesn’t just cost draft picks; it requires cap space for an inevitable extension that simply doesn’t exist.

Rebuild the Trenches, Not the Hype

Beyond the finances, the Browns have a foundational crisis. Nearly the entire offensive line needs to be rebuilt this offseason through both the draft and free agency. What good is a blue-chip QB like Stroud if he’s running for his life behind a makeshift front?

Mortgaging the future (again) to acquire Stroud would leave the cupboards bare for the actual roster surgery this team needs. Cleveland needs to stop chasing the "splash" and start fixing the infrastructure. If Berry and Haslam fall for the Texans’ bait twice, they would be the laughing stock of the league, as well as on the receiving end of Browns fans rage worldwide.
