Man United want to sign a new midfielder in the summer transfer window, and they are reportedly considering a Liverpool player.

Man United will head into the transfer window expecting to see a lot of change at Old Trafford, as they need to work out who their next permanent manager is. Michael Carrick has performed well so far, and could be in line for the job, but either way, the new manager will need to be backed in the transfer market.

The midfield position is the main area of concern for United, with Casemiro due to leave at the end of the season, Manuel Ugarte struggling for form, and Bruno Fernandes’ future uncertain.

Man United consider Alexis Mac Allister move

Seeing as Baleba and Anderson are both expected to be very expensive moves, Man United could look elsewhere, and reports are suggesting they could make a shock raid on Liverpool to sign Argentina international Alexis Mac Allister.

According to the Daily Star, it is understood that Mac Allister could leave Liverpool in the summer, despite the fact that his contract at Anfield runs until June 2028. They report that Man United are considering making a move for the midfielder in the summer, and they are weighing up how much they could bid on the 27-year-old to try and tempt Liverpool to sell him.

Mac Allister joined the Reds from Brighton in July 2023, and he has since scored 17 goals and provided 17 assists in 132 matches. He was a key part of Arne Slot’s title-winning side last season, although his form, much like the rest of the Reds, has declined this season. He has an estimated market value of £74m, but seeing as United are a rival, Liverpool could demand much more from the Red Devils.

Mac Allister could help to replace Fernandes

It is understood that Man United want to extend Fernandes’ contract at Old Trafford, however, it isn’t clear yet whether Fernandes wants to stay. He nearly left in the summer after a £100m bid from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. However, the Portugal international wanted to stay in Manchester.

However, if Fernandes leaves the club in the summer, which he could do, Mac Allister would be a really good replacement, because not only can he play as a deeper box to box midfielder, or holding midfielder, he can also play in an advanced attacking role, to help create chances for the attackers too, something that Fernandes excels at. The big question just remains over whether Liverpool would be willing to sell him, especially to a rival.
