Levi Colwill expected return timeline given after on-pitch training at Chelsea - journalist

Chelsea may have been hoping for a Levi Colwill return after seeing the defender back on the grass at Cobham, but Matt Law has shared his expected return.

Liam Rosenior isn’t short on defensive options at the heart of the defence right now. Tosin Adarabioyo has returned from injury, which means that he joins Mamadou Sarr, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile at Chelsea.

Levi Colwill will be itching to rejoin his teammates, but he’s still out recovering from a knee injury that he suffered during pre-season.

The most frustrating part is that Colwill had just started to take on more responsibility and really lead things for Chelsea, as well as starting to make waves for England.

And it doesn’t seem as if he’ll play again this season.

Levi Colwill not expected to play again this season

According to Matt Law, who was speaking on the London Is Blue podcast, Levi Colwill will return in the summer for the Blues.

After the presenter brought up the fact that Colwill had done some on-field training, Law said this.

“There’s been a bit of word that you know, they hope he will play again this season. But you know, they’ve got to be careful. I’d be surprised. I’ve written him off for the season.

“And quite a lot of the time, when you see these players come back for training and suddenly see them in pictures, you can get quite excited, but they’re a long way off. Actually, proper training and a long way down the line.

“So it makes no sense tostart putting any pressure on Levi Colwill.”

Chelsea should give Colwill as long as he wants to recover

While Levi Colwill’s return to the grass at Cobham has sparked excitement, Chelsea must resist the temptation to fast-track him.

Recovering from an ACL injury is as much a psychological battle as it is a physical one. Rushing a player back, even by two weeks, significantly increases the risk of an injury or a devastating re-tear.

Furthermore, the emergence of Mamadou Sarr and the consistent form of Wesley Fofana have provided Liam Rosenior with a luxury. Chelsea don’t require a half fit Colwill if injuries stay away from the rest of the squad this season, as they’ve managed just fine since Rosenior took charge.
