Ajax star Mika Godts needs to look at Manchester City star Jeremy Doku. Such a change will perhaps get him to the World Cup.
That’s according to Toby Alderweireld. He’s offered his advice to the 20-year-old via Voetbal Primeur as he continues to impress in the World Cup. He thinks the Manchester City star should be in Godts’ eyeline.
Godts has been impressing at Ajax since stepping into the first team in 2024. HE joined the Dutch giants for €1m in 2023 after coming through the youth ranks at Genk in his homeland.
He’s since managed 20 goals and 20 assists in 98 games for Ajax, as well as nine goals and four assists in 25 games for the U21s. This season he has 12 goals and 10 assists in 31 games in total.
Goals and assists galore
The latest impressive performance saw him score two and assist one in a 4-1 win over Fortuna Sittard. His impressive numbers should have him firmly on Belgium’s radar for the World Cup.
The youngster is yet to make an appearance for his country. In fact, he hasn’t even appeared for their Under 21s. His last international appearance was against Ireland’s U19s in November 2023.
Alderweireld thinks that can change, if he stars to learn from the Manchester City star ahead of him in the pecking order.
“I give him the best chance of the Belgians at Ajax for the World Cup, even though we have a lot of attacking options,” he said.
“With Jérémy Doku, who is world-class, Dodi Lukebakio, and Leandro Trossard. Godts doesn’t always look for his man anymore but is increasingly choosing his moments better.
“He plays more professionally and makes the right decisions more often. He should take a cue from Doku in that regard. Don’t pass someone for the sake of passing, but only when it’s necessary. That ultimately leads to better results. Goals and assists, you need those.”
Arsenal interest
The World Cup might not be the only benefit for Godts. He could also secure himself a big move with improved numbers.
Sport Witness have covered several reports already regarding Arsenal’s interest in him. The Gunners saw a late inquiry in January turned down. His agent then spoke about the interest a week later.
They might be returning in the summer, perhaps giving Godts another reason to start copying Doku like Alderweireld suggests.
