Ashley Cole claims former Chelsea star was a better January signing than Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea legend Ashley Cole is a fan of both Enzo Fernandez and former teammate Nicolas Anelka.

It is not hard to see why. Right now, Fernandez is one of the best players in England, while Anelka was a top striker in his day.

Chelsea signed both men in the January transfer window, with Fernandez joining the Blues in 2023 and Anelka arriving 15 years prior to that.

You can choose one Chelsea legend to play in Liam Rosenior’s team today. Who are you calling? 🤔

Ashley Cole chooses Nicolas Anelka over Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea have made many good additions during the January transfer window, but Cole has suggested that Anelka may just be No.1.

In a game of winner stays on featuring some of Chelsea’s most high-profile January signings, Cole was eventually asked to pick between Anelka and Fernandez in a video shared by the Premier League’s official X account.

Who deserves the credit for Enzo Fernandez’s recent success?

The retired left-back chose Anelka after previously picking him over Branislav Ivanovic as well.

Anelka made his Chelsea debut 18 years ago, helping the Blues to beat Tottenham Hotspur in a 2-0 win.

As for Fernandez, his debut came in a 0-0 draw with another one of Chelsea’s London rivals, Fulham.

Why Nicolas Anelka was such a bargain for Chelsea

Not only is Anelka one of Chelsea’s greatest-ever January signings, but he is also one of their cheapest.

They paid just £15m for the Frenchman, making him an absolute bargain. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he scored 59 goals in 184 appearances.

In the 2008/09 season, Anelka won the Premier League Golden Boot with 19 goals. The following year, Anelka won the division’s title, so he clearly had a successful time in west London.

You can debate who Chelsea’s No.1 winter addition is, but Anelka is certainly up there. In terms of talent, so is Fernandez, who has plenty of time to accomplish even more in a Chelsea shirt.
