Star Wars Releases New Mandalorian & Grogu Trailer After Divisive Super Bowl Ad

A few days after the release of its divisive Super Bowl teaser, Disney has premiered another full-length trailer for its upcoming Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu.

The Mandalorian and Grogu marks Star Wars' first return to the theaters since 2019, as The Mandalorian's Din Djarin and the Force-sensitive youngling Grogu leap from the small screen to the big screen. While audience reception to The Mandalorian and Grogu's recent Tauntaun-centric teaser has been mixed, the franchise has a lot riding on this new movie. Its success (or failure) could determine the future of Star Wars' theatrical and narrative output.

The latest trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu showcases Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin and Grogu as they take on new enemies while working as "freelance" rangers for the New Republic. As the Imperial Remnant's presence in the galaxy grows, Din and Grogu will need every ally they can find to "prevent another war," including Sigourney Weaver's New Republic Colonel, featured in the trailer.

Though the majority of the movie's cast is still under wraps, one confirmed cast member is Jeremy Allen White, who will voice the surprisingly niche Star Wars character Rotta the Hutt, whom Mando seemingly hunts for in the trailer. For those unfamiliar with Star Wars' extensive animated canon, Rotta is Jabba the Hutt's son, first introduced as a baby Huttlet in the 2008 movie Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

The Mandalorian and Grogu will take place after the events of The Mandalorian season 3. In the season finale, Din and Grogu establish a home base on the newly prosperous Nevarro, following Din's official adoption of Grogu as his ward. Grogu also connects with Mandalore's thought-to-be-extinct Mythosaur, which could have major implications on Grogu's status as a Jedi-turned-Mandalorian.

To what extent fellow "Mandoverse" series Ahsoka will influence The Mandalorian and Grogu's plot remains to be seen. Confirmed character Garazeb Orrelios (Steve Blum) acts as a bridge between The Mandalorian and the Star Wars Rebels characters that were reintroduced in live-action in Ahsoka season 1, so anything is possible, especially as Ahsoka's finale saw the Imperial Remnant's long-awaited leader, Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen), find his way back to Star Wars' primary galaxy.

Although some viewers remain skeptical about The Mandalorian's new storytelling medium, director and Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau recently promised fans that the movie would make a trip to the cinema worthwhile. Speaking at this month's Star Wars: Most Wanted event, Favreau said of The Mandalorian and Grogu's mission:

"We want to take you on an adventure, and that adventure has to fill up the screen and has to be something where people at this moment in time, when so much is competing for your attention, that you're gonna stop what you're doing, and you're gonna go to a movie theater."

While Star Wars has several movies in various stages of development, the only other confirmed release alongside The Mandalorian and Grogu currently belongs to Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling's one-off standalone story, Star Wars: Starfighter, set in a never-before-explored era of the Star Wars timeline. Starfighter is scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 28, 2027, a little over a year after The Mandalorian and Grogu's upcoming release date.

The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives exclusively in theaters on May 22, 2026.
