Steelers Among Favorites to Add 5-Time All-Pro WR

Clutch Points named the Pittsburgh Steelers the second-most likely team to sign new free agent wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

Before the NFL offseason began, pundits speculated the Pittsburgh Steelers could draft a quarterback in the first round. That narrative has died down, though, with quarterback Aaron Rodgers more likely to return, and switched to the Steelers potentially targeting a wide receiver at No. 21 overall.

But could the team go the veteran route at that position too? That appears to be at least on the table.

The 33rd Team revealed that Clutch Points has the Steelers as the second-most likely team to sign 31-year-old wideout Tyreek Hill in NFL free agency. The only club with higher odds as of February 17 is the Kansas City Chiefs.

93.7 The Fan’s Andrew Fillipponi tweeted the full list of favorites. The Steelers sit in front of the other strong favorites for Hill — the Los Angeles Chargers, Green Bay Packers and Las Vegas Raiders.

The Steelers have the 2nd best odds to sign Tyreek Hill. What else is on the offseason docket? Can they coax Lynn Swann out of retirement? Is the goal to become the oldest team in NFL history to go 9-8? Please dont sign Hill.

Hill is available in NFL free agency because the Miami Dolphins released him Monday.

In his 10-year career, Hill has made first-team All-Pro five times. The most recent time was 2023 when he led the league with 1,799 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns.

Why the Steelers Could Pursue WR Tyreek Hill

The Steelers have been rumored as a landing spot for a variety of different receivers over the past few offseason. That’s because the position group remains an obvious weakness on the roster.

That is still the case for the team entering the 2026 offseason.

D.K. Metcalf led the Steelers with 850 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns last year. No other wideout on the team reached even 375 receiving yards.

Furthermore, Mike McCarthy’s new offense could lose several key wideouts. Adam Thielen has already retired and Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Calvin Austin III are free agents.

Austin was second for Steelers receivers with 372 receiving yards last year.

Clearly, the position group badly needs upgraded. Running back Kenneth Gainwell actually led the Steelers in catches last year with 73. But the offense can’t even rely on Gainwell’s production next season either, as he is also a pending unrestricted free agent.

Adding Hill would begin to fill the receiver void for the Steelers.

Why the Steelers Shouldn’t Sign Hill

The need for another receive (really several receivers) in Pittsburgh is obvious. That’s why Steelers pundits immediately discussed Hill as an option when the Dolphins released him Monday.

However, few of those pundits came to the conclusion that Hill was the answer.

“Hopefully the Steelers stay far away from both Tyreek Hill and James Daniels,” tweeted Steelers Depot’s Alex Kozora.

The red flags around Hill are quite obvious.

He’s a speed receiver who is 31 years old. Hill experienced a significant decline in production during 2024 and then suffered a torn ACL and dislocated knee last September.

It’s not clear Hill will be ready in Week 1. If he healthy for the season opener, he could still miss it because of an NFL suspension stemming from a domestic violence incident.

“Had a production decrease the year before the injury, plus a severe injury, plus a potential suspension looming,” wrote Penn Live’s Nick Farabaugh.

“Who knows what he looks like when he returns or even when he will return?”

With that amount of baggage, it might not even be worth taking a flier on Hill.
