Move over Fernandez and Caicedo,'outstanding'Chelsea star is the team's Player of the Season so far - opinion

There is a while to go before Chelsea announce their Player of the Season, with there still being plenty of games left to play.

However, that has not prevented Chelsea supporters on social media from discussing who they think has been the team’s best player so far.

Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Joao Pedro have all been mentioned, and Cole Palmer would have undoubtedly been named had he not picked up any injuries this term.

There is only one clear winner, though, and he has a great chance of picking up the actual award come the end of the campaign.

Why Joao Pedro has been Chelsea’s Player of the Season

If the campaign ended today, Pedro would have to be given the club’s Player of the Season award. The 24-year-old has done so much for the team.

Firstly, Pedro has done what he was bought to do: score goals. With 13 to his name, Pedro is Chelsea’s top scorer in all competitions.

Ten of his goals have come in the Premier League, meaning that he is also the Blues’ top scorer in that specific competition.

The Brazilian has not been stat padding either; his goals have come in big games and at moments when Chelsea have really needed someone to step up.

Who’s your Chelsea Player of the Season so far?

Tell us why below! ✍️

Last month, he grabbed a brace away at Napoli to send his team straight into the last 16 of the Champions League. Pedro also scored the winner against Tottenham Hotspur back in November, and in games versus West Ham United, Fulham, Newcastle United, and Brentford when Chelsea were either drawing or trailing, he managed to pop up and find the back of the net.

As well as that, Pedro has done shifts up front and in the No.10 position. There was a point in the season when he did go quiet, but most of Chelsea’s players have shown a bit of inconsistency, including Caicedo and Fernandez.

Chelsea are being linked with Igor Thiago, but there is no doubt that Pedro should remain as the side’s first-choice striker.

Chelsea’s other candidates for Player of the Season

As well as Caicedo and Fernandez, Robert Sanchez and Trevoh Chalobah also deserve to be in any Player of the Season debate.

The goalkeeper and defender have probably not been the two best footballers at Chelsea this term. However, they have arguably been the two most consistent.

That has to be taken into consideration for any Player of the Season vote, but again, Pedro has to be the outstanding candidate.

If the former Brighton & Hove Albion man does go on to win the accolade, no one should have any complaints.

“He was outstanding,” Liam Rosenior said via Chelsea’s official club website when discussing one of Pedro’s performances under him.
