Jeanie Buss expressed doubt that LeBron James will return to the Los Angeles Lakers next season, leaving his future in his own hands amid years of reported friction.
Los Angeles Lakers governor and former controlling owner Jeanie Buss sounded "doubtful" that LeBron James will return to the team next season, according to Alex Sherman of CNBC Sports.
James said on Sunday that he's still unsure whether he will play beyond this season.
Buss, meanwhile, stated that she would leave the decision about his future with the Lakers entirely up to LeBron. She expressed doubt that he would return, either because he might retire or choose to play elsewhere.
"Never say never, but you know, he certainly hasn't given an indication," Buss told Alex Sherman. "He's earned the right to decide how his career will go, and you know, he continues to impress."
ESPN has reported that there has been significant friction between Buss and James over the years.
Buss reportedly grew frustrated with LeBron over his ego, the influence of Klutch Sports, the Russell Westbrook trade, Bronny's draft, and even considered not extending his contract or trading him to the LA Clippers.
According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, if James chooses to play a 24th NBA season, the Lakers, led by GM Rob Pelinka, are hoping he retires as a Laker.
Buss and her family sold their majority stake in the team to Mark Walter last year in a deal that valued the Lakers at $10 billion.
