South Florida’s winter weather playlist this week? Perhaps a soundtrack starting with Glenn Frey’s “The Heat Is On” and then Katy Perry’s “Hot and Cold. ”
That sums up the forecast: A summerlike week, with high temperatures in the 80s, will give way to another cold front after the weekend.
We already have felt it. The Miami and Fort Lauderdale areas boasted temperatures in the mid-80s through Presidents Day weekend, missing the record of 88 for a Feb. 16, according to the National Weather Service.
The lack of rain didn’t help the extreme drought conditions, but it made strolling the Coconut Grove Arts Festival and the Discover Boating Miami International Boat Show easier. Key West was 82 on Sunday, close to the record 84 for the day.
Looking ahead
So, what can we expect the rest of this week in South Florida? More heat.
According to the National Weather Service in Miami, Tuesday to Sunday will heat up to 80 and higher from Key West to Fort Lauderdale. Thursday and Friday will reach into the mid-80s, according to the weather service. CBS News Miami meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez said Sunday could hit 85.
“High pressure will dominate our weather pattern the rest of the week, and that will keep us mostly dry, and warm us up,” Gonzalez said in her Tuesday weather report. Morning lows will remain in the mid- and upper-60s.
Then comes a change. A cold front moves in on Monday, dropping morning temperatures in the Miami area to about 59, and highs will only climb to 70, according to the weather service.
Rain chance?
There’s just a 15% to 20% chance for scattered showers Sunday afternoon in South Florida, according to the weather service and Miami Herald news partner CBS News Miami.
Key West looks to be even drier this week, with just a 10% chance Sunday night ahead of the temperature drop.
