Chelsea “made contact” with West Ham in January over surprise move for “special” 21-year-old…

West Ham’s January window was concluded by Axel Disasi’s loan arrival from Chelsea on deadline day, a move that has coincided with a strong run of form lifting the Hammers closer to Premier League safety.

But Disasi wasn’t the only player linking the two clubs behind the scenes.

Reports now reveal that Chelsea also made an approach for one of West Ham’s standout performers.

Journalist Aarón Ramiro reports that Chelsea reached out to West Ham during the January window with interest in Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

The 21-year-old has impressed since joining the London Stadium from Southampton, quickly establishing himself as a key starter.

“Chelsea made contact with West Ham United in January regarding a potential transfer for highly rated 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes, as the Blues sought to bolster their midfield options,” Ramiro explained.

However, the Hammers were firm. There was “no plan to sanction exit,” with Fernandes seen as integral to Nuno Espírito Santo’s fight against relegation.

Since his arrival, Fernandes has consistently driven games from midfield, using his energy and intelligence to control the tempo. Analytics United have described him as a “special” talent, highlighting his influence on West Ham’s recent upturn in form.

Looking to the summer, West Ham will be in a strong position to keep hold of Fernandes. Contracted until June 2029, any potential suitor would need to meet a significant asking price, meaning the Hammers are unlikely to be forced into a sale.

For now, Fernandes remains one of West Ham’s most important players, set to lead the midfield as the club pushes for Premier League survival.
