Jones, who tragically passed away last year, was a fans’ favourite at both clubs, who go head-to-head in the fifth round on the first weekend of March.
Thomas, a lifelong pal of Jones after the two came through The Racecourse ranks together in the early Seventies, described the draw as ‘unbelievable’.
“What a draw,” said Thomas. “I thought of Joey straight away and how much he’d have loved to see his two old teams in the FA Cup.
“But Joey and me are not the only connections with Chelsea and Wrexham.
“John Neal went there as manager and totally transformed the club’s fortunes and Eddie Niedzwiecki was also there when Joey and me played for Chelsea.
“It’s a brilliant draw and who knows who will win it?
“Chelsea are a Premier League team but Wrexham are at home and with the club’s proud history, you wouldn’t back against them!”
Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has said talk of the FA Cup in the Reds camp is banned with the team totally concentrating on the next three Championship games against Ipswich Town, Portsmouth and Charlton.
“I’ve heard people talk about it being a distraction but I don’t agree,” added Thomas, who was recently unveiled as a club ambassador. “It’s the FA Cup and it’s a massive competition.”
Thomas twice reached the quarter-final stage with Wrexham in 1974 and 1978 and was runner-up in the final with Manchester United when they lost 3-2 to Arsenal at Wembley in 1979.
Tickets for the fifth round clash will be like gold-dust and by Ryan Reynolds’ reaction you’d expect the club’s owner to be in attendance at The Racecourse.
Watching the draw alongside fellow Hollywood A-lister Hugh Jackman, Reds’ co-owner Reynolds said: “We’re at home to Chelsea!”
