Liverpool are looking to replace Mohamed Salah in the summer and news of their top target has emerged.

How do you replace Mohamed Salah? The easy answer is to say that you can’t, that it is impossible.

It would be a similar story for Man City if they had to replace Erling Haaland. The best players in the world are priceless for a reason, because they are matchwinners on a regular basis and can be relied upon to produce the goods, time, after time.

Liverpool set to let Mohamed Salah leave

Salah might not be at his mercurial best this season, but there are a number of mitigating circumstances. From the outside looking in, the 33-year old seems to have been the hardest hit by the tragic death of Diogo Jota with the Egypt international looking like he has found football a chore for much of the season. Gone is the smile on his face and the joy he used to show on a regular basis.

Salah might not have been at his best, and yet he is still out performing players like Bryan Mbeumo, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka, players who have all received plaudits throughout the season and dodged a similar level of criticism despite being in their peak years, rather than approaching their mid-thirties. If, as expected, Salah leaves Liverpool in the summer, they should target the best player in his position in Europe.

Who Liverpool want to replace Salah

After impressing in the Premier League, Michael Olise has gone to the next level for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and has hit 13 goals and 25 assists this season and 33 goals and 48 assists since joining from Crystal Palace. The mercurial playmaker has added consistency to the maverick nature of his play and could be the final piece of the jigsaw in a three-pronged attack featuring Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike.

According to TEAMtalk though, despite Liverpool being interested in Olise, the German giants are in no rush to sell: “Liverpool, under owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG), are bracing for life after Salah and have been doing extensive groundwork on potential replacements.

“The likes of Yan Diomande, Nico Williams, Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola are all in their thinking as potential alternatives, but Olise is the name they would love to build their next attacking era around. But sources have made it clear to us that a deal is simply not realistic at this stage.”

As with Wirtz and Ekitike, if Liverpool want the best, they will need to get the cheque book out again. Selling Salah to Saudi Arabia won’t cover the cost entirely, but it might not be far away given their desperation to find the next marquee signing.
