“The Packers Need a True No.1 Cornerback”: Green Bay Packers Insider Believes That the…

The Green Bay Packers finished with a 9-7-1 record during the regular season and once again were the seventh seed in the NFC for the third straight season. Green Bay has not been able to elevate to another level in the last three years under head coach Matt LaFleur. It was a surprise when the Packers gave him a contract extension after they blew that lead in the NFC wild card round against the Chicago Bears.

One of the issues with the Packers toward the end of the season was that Micah Parsons was out with a torn ACL. Another issue with Green Bay has been the backend of the defense, especially the cornerback position. General manager Brian Gutekunst for some reason has not addressed that position in the NFL Draft, free agency, or trade over the last couple of offseasons. The starting cornerbacks for Green Bay last season was Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine.

Green Bay will not have its first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft because of the Parsons trade with the Dallas Cowboys. The Packers however will need to address the cornerback position this offseason no doubt. It is the biggest need for Green Bay this offseason. Matt Schneidman of the Athletic said,

“The Packers need a true No. 1 cornerback, or at least someone who can grow into that role. Keisean Nixon is a decent player, but I’m not sure he can be the top outside cornerback on a Super Bowl team. Complicating matters is the fact that Green Bay doesn’t have a first-round pick to draft a cornerback with in either of the next two drafts. There aren’t exactly enticing free-agent options at the position, either, so maybe general manager Brian Gutekunst uses his second-round pick on a cornerback and develops him behind Nixon and Carrington Valentine for now. At the very least, the Packers need bodies at the position both now and for the future since both Nixon and Valentine are entering contract years.”

If Green Bay doesn’t address this position this offseason, there ceiling once again will be the seventh seed in the NFC instead of potentially going for something better. Nixon can’t be the number one cornerback for the Packers entering next season. That is something that Gutekunst can’t possibly sell to this fanbase. This position should have been addressed during the 2024 NFL Draft. For two years, this franchise has not addressed this position for some reason and they need to finally do something about it.
