The Kansas City football world settled into an unfamiliar, uneasy rhythm as the franchise faces a serious salary-cap squeeze while its superstar quarterback works his way back from a torn ACL.
On the roster front, veteran right tackle Jawaan Taylor was widely viewed as the Kansas City Chiefs' top offensive lineman by experience and salary.
He signed a four-year, $80 million deal in 2023 that placed him among the highest-paid tackles in the NFL, a pricey cornerstone many assumed the front office would keep while juggling other cap decisions.
That perception shifted Tuesday, however, when multiple outlets reported Kansas City is "likely" to release Taylor in the coming weeks, a move that would free up roughly $20 million in cap space while stripping Patrick Mahomes of one of his most reliable pass protectors.
Kansas City is already deep into negative cap territory for 2026, sitting at roughly –$57.9 million, the worst mark in the league. That reality forces general manager Brett Veach and his staff to choose between restructuring contracts, trading high-cost veterans, or cutting them outright.
Clearing Taylor's number would represent the single largest immediate financial lever available, trimming near-term liabilities while opening space for re-signings and targeted additions. On the field, however, the calculation becomes far more complicated.
Taylor has been a polarizing presence in Kansas City - a veteran capable of steady pass protection at times, yet also prone to drive-killing penalties.
Still, releasing him would create an immediate vacancy at right tackle and remove one of the veteran anchors who helped Kansas City win a Super Bowl during the 2023 season and return to the big stage in 2024.
That kind of instability matters for any quarterback, but especially for one returning from a major knee injury.
Even though right tackle is not Mahomes' blind side, its importance should not be understated. A reliable right tackle stabilizes the pocket, supports the run game, and limits the kind of interior-to-edge pressure that can create awkward, high-risk contact points for a recovering quarterback.
If the offensive line loses an experienced starter this spring, it could affect cohesion and subtly increase the burden on Mahomes as he works his way back from the biggest injury he’s had to deal with in his nine-year NFL career.
