Ravens Trade Pitch Lands Projected $76 Million Former No. 5 Overall Pick

The Baltimore Ravens made a big mistake last offseason when they didn’t make a play — through free agency or trade — for an elite edge rusher.

They paid dearly for it. Not only did the Ravens finish 8-9 overall and miss the playoffs, but it was a significant factor in what cost longtime head coach John Harbaugh his job after 18 seasons.

The Ravens even tried to trade for an edge rusher midway through season, striking a deal with the Tennessee Titans for Dre’Mont Jones, but he wasn’t a difference maker.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell proposed a trade that could help the Ravens not run into those same problems again in 2026 by swapping a 2026 4th round pick for New York Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux.

The price has never been lower for Thibodeaux after 2025, when he missed a career high 7 games with a shoulder injury and had a career low 2.5 sacks — he now finds himself firmly behind NFL All-Pro Brian Burns and 2025 No. 3 overall pick Abdul Carter.

“The Ravens, on the other hand, are thin on the edge,” Barnwell wrote. “Mike Green had 3.5 sacks as a rookie, albeit with 14 knockdowns. No Ravens player had more than five sacks last season. Veterans Kyle Van Noy and Dre’Mont Jones are free agents. And former first-round pick Odafe Oweh, whom the Ravens traded at midseason, had 7.5 sacks on just 347 snaps after joining the Chargers … The Ravens would be taking a targeted swing on a talented player in a contract year who just turned 25 in December.”

Minter Could Be Key to Unlocking Potential

The Ravens might have the key to unlocking Thibodeaux’s incredible potential in their new head coach — former Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, who will take over play calling duties on defense but still had the smarts to hire a defensive coordinator in former Raven Anthony Weaver.

Minter has a history of taking talented players like Thibodeaux and unlocking whatever upside they have. In Thibodeaux’s case, that means figuring out how he can consistently become the player who had career highs of 50 tackles, 11.5 sacks and 12 TFL in 2023.

Thibodeaux, 6-foot-5 and 258 pounds, was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft out of the University of Oregon — a year in which the Giants had 2 picks in the Top 10 and also took offensive tackle Evan Neal at No. 7 overall.

Through their first 4 seasons, neither player has made a Pro Bowl and both were taken ahead of 4 different 1,000-yard receivers in Drake London, Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave and Jameson Williams.

They also passed over Pro Bowl and NFL All-Pro talents in the 1st round like a pair of Ravens — center Tyler Linderbaum and safety Kyle Hamilton — along with All-Pro offensive guard Tyler Smith and All-Pro linebacker Devin Bush.

Thibodeaux Will NEVER Be More Motivated

At 25 years old, Thibodeaux has exactly 1 chance to land a massive payday by how he plays in 2026. Spotrac already projects his market value in free agency to be something in the range of a 4-year, $74.6 million contract in the 2027 cycle.

If Thibodeaux comes to the Ravens and delivers a double-digit sack season in 2026 and plays on a team that’s a true AFC contender, that number could easily soar past $100 million.

At the very least, it’s a great opportunity for a short-term rental at a reasonable price because the Giants exercised the 5th year option on Thibodeaux’s contract, which will pay him approximately $14.7 million in 2025.
