Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa has struggled to make an impact at Anfield, mostly featuring off the bench in the 2025/26 season. A January exit seemed possible as he sought regular football, but Alexander Isak’s injury made Liverpool hesitant to let attackers leave.
Despite this, Chiesa is yet to secure a regular spot under Arne Slot. Slot recently discussed using Chiesa in a central role to cover for Isak, who will be sidelined for several months with a broken leg. This leaves Hugo Ekitike as Liverpool’s only fit striker, making his fitness crucial for the team.
“He (Ekitike) is not the only No. 9 I have,” Slot said. “Federico Chiesa can play in that position as well, so I have the chance to maybe, I wouldn’t say rest him, but take him off if he’s completely tired.”
Chiesa has chosen to turn down several international call-ups for Gennaro Gattuso’s Italy to focus on adapting to the intensity at Anfield, with the Azzurri coach admitting in November: “We know well what we tell each other, and I must respect what the player tells me. I can’t say anything else. Yes [it was Chiesa’s decision not to join], it’s already the fourth or fifth time that I’m explaining this.”
According to Calcio Mercato, Liverpool are now prepared to sell Federico Chiesa in the summer transfer window after blocking a January move. The 28-year-old will be placed on the market, with Liverpool aiming to secure a transfer fee between €15million and €20million. (£13million and £17million).
Premier League side West Ham United showed interest in January, but the Reds refused to let him leave, leaving open the possibility of renewed interest later in the year.
Chiesa has made 19 Premier League appearances this season, but only one start, totalling just 240 minutes – highlighting his desire for more consistent game time.
