Former Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy has received a strong warning.
Former Michigan Wolverines star quarterback J.J. McCarthy has gotten off to a slow start to begin his NFL career.
After leading Michigan to a National Championship win in his final season in Ann Arbor, McCarthy missed his entire rookie season with the Minnesota Vikings due to a knee injury. Last season, however, he entered the season as the starting quarterback.
Unfortunately, things did not go according to plan for McCarthy. He dealt with multiple injury issues throughout the season and played very inconsistent football when he was on the field.
Heading into the NFL offseason, the Vikings seem likely to invest in another quarterback to provide competition for McCarthy. He’ll have to earn his job moving forward.
With that being said, one Minnesota and NFL legend has spoken out with a scary warning for McCarthy. The warning shows that McCarthy could very well lose his job with the Vikings if he’s not careful.
J.J. McCarthy Faces Serious Warning from Minnesota Vikings Legend
Ahead of the offseason, Vikings legend John Randle spoke out with strong words about McCarthy. He’s not writing the former Wolverines star off, but he’s not sold that McCarthy is the long-term answer for Minnesota.
“If I was the GM, I would definitely give him competition,” Randle said. “I’m bringing in competition for him. I would tell him, ‘Last year, you had your chance. We gave it to you. But you didn’t prove that you could really handle it, so we’re gonna bring somebody in who’s definitely gonna give you competition.’”
At the end of the day, the Vikings should bring in another quarterback option.
McCarthy did nothing throughout the 2025 NFL season to instill confidence in him. His first season as a starter actually left more questions than answers about the future.
It sounds like Minnesota is going to bring in a veteran quarterback who can both compete with McCarthy and mentor him. Who that will end up being remains to be seen.
Who Could the Vikings Bring in to Compete with McCarthy?
There are quite a few options for the Vikings to choose from this offseason.
One of the most popular rumors has connected the team to veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins. He had success during his first tenure in Minnesota and would be welcomed back by head coach Kevin O’Connell.
Aaron Rodgers could be another option to take a look at for the Vikings as well. Or, the team could consider taking a flier on a young option like Anthony Richardson or potentially Dillon Gabriel.
No one knows what Minnesota will choose to do this offseason. However, it’s clear that McCarthy is facing a lot of doubt as the long-term option for the Vikings.
Regardless of what ends up happening, Michigan Wolverines fans will continue rooting McCarthy on as he looks to earn his spot in the NFL.
